The Project: “Development and Sport”

In the year of the Football World Cup in Germany, everyone is talking about sport. Hardly a day goes by without photos, reports and events covering the World Cup. On the occasion of this major event, the Association of German Development Non-Governmental Organisations (VENRO) is taking a look at sport from an unusual angle.
“Development and Sport” brings the development dimension of sport to the fore: What is the role of sport in development co-operation? What potential does it bear as a means and mediator? These questions will be addressed by the VENRO Project at a Symposium and a European Summer School. The events take up the results of the UN International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005 and will give new impulses to the linking up of sport and development for justice and peace.
In addition, “Development and Sport” promotes networking and exchange among representatives coming from the fields of development co-operation and sport. Alongside the events, an online data bank with successful campaigns and projects supports this goal.
